Default Bad accident w/ even sadder story.

Quote:

Lancaster Police continue to investigate a Thursday night accident that claimed the lives of two people.

It happened around 10:30pm near the intersection of Transit Road and Michael Anthony Lane. Lieutenant Ron Rozler says Mark Harhigh, 24, was driving his 2002 Ford Mustang south on Transit Road when he lost control, crossed four lanes of traffic, and struck a utility pole.

Rozler said the force of the impact was so great that it split the Mustang into two separate pieces. Harhigh died at ECMC Friday morning while his girlfriend, Melanie Page, 21, Cheektowaga, died at the scene.

"It was the scariest thing I have ever seen and I hope I never have to see anything like that again," said Stacey Fisher. She knew Mark well. She was at the accident right after it happened.

And like many friends and classmates, Stacey took time to go back to the accident site Friday afternoon with flowers and a few prayers.

"I was just praying for their parents," said Fisher. "I thought how their parents were going to feel when they received that phone call."

Police say the car crossed four lanes and slammed right into a pole.

Witnesses report seeing the car street racing with a Dodge Neon. Police are now interviewing the driver of that car to find out what actually happened.

"You always hear about people in their sports cars racing and this is unfortunately what happens, could happen," said Fisher.

Police say street racing isn't a problem along Transit Road but not everyone agrees. Ron Knibbs saw the crash Thursday night. He lives across the street.

"Have you ever noticed street racing of any kind," 2 On Your Side's Josh Boose asked Knibbs.

"Oh yeah, all the time," Knibbs replied. "It's crazy."

"Explain to me what you see," Boose asked.

"I just see them speeding," said Knibbs. "They've got to be going 75 or 80 miles an hour."

"It shouldn't be happening," said Nicole D’Amico, a friend of the victims. "It's a horrible thing what happened and kids shouldn't be doing these kinds of things."

According to Harhigh's family, Mark had owned the car just two days. It's not the first tragedy to strike the family. Mark's mother, Toni, is currently battling brain and lung cancer.

Because Mark had just started a new job, his health insurance was not yet active. Family members aren't sure how they can cover the medical expenses Mark incurred before he died, in addition to those currently mounting with his mother.

To help, relatives have set-up a fund to help his parents. Donations can be taken to any Citizens Bank branch and deposited into the Mark Harhigh Memorial Fund.

If you have any additional information on the accident, or the possibility of drag racing, you're asked to call the Lancaster Police Department at 683-2800.
